Books: The Kind Diet by Alicia Silverstone

kinddietA few years ago a friend lent me The Kind Diet book.  I read it in a couple of days and ordered my own copy.  I was struck by the authenticity of Alicia’s writing style which is so sweet, intuitive and funny and informative.  I shared my copy with my neighbor who also bought her own copy, and she became my first student to mentor on the benefits of a plant based diet. Gina would join me every month at our local veg potluck bringing along a new recipe that she wanted to share with the group.  Having a friend to share this new lifestyle with can make a big difference in taking the steps to changing one’s old habits.  I know from experience that it is always easier when you have someone with the same values and goals to talk to and share your successes with.

I would recommend The Kind Diet book to anyone new to the veg lifestyle as Alicia brings her kind personality to this subject with some of her favorite mentors that she credits her success to.  I enjoyed reading about the macro background and terms she used of being a flirt or a superhero.  I have tried several of the recipes and have found some new favorites such as polenta casserole, artichoke and mushroom crostini, lentil stew, peach crumble and Alicia’s Magical Healing Soup.  Alicia has a unique set of recipes that I enjoy and I keep a copy of the book in my kitchen for inspiration.  We all need a bit of that from time to time and so having a few quality recipe books are the inspiration we need to whip up some good eats.

Over the years I have collected an array of raw and vegan cookbooks to help me to create delicious foods in my kitchen.  Once in a while I will pick up a non vegan cookbook if I find some fave recipes that I can veganize.  I love the challenge of making tasty replicas of traditional meals without the animal products.  I find them to always taste better too!  The ingredients are plants which are fresher and non-clogging which is important in a healthy diet.  Our bodies work hard for us 24 hours a day and I have a motto that I live by: “eat to nourish.”  I feel it is my duty to provide myself and my hubby a healthy diet of fresh plant foods that nourishes our bodies, keeps us slim, and is healthy.

I would recommend checking out Alicia Silverstone’s “The Kind Diet” so that you will see why thousands of people have made this book to be on the New York Times Bestseller’s list.  This book needs to be in every kitchen that wants to aspire to healthy eating without harming anyone in the process.
